The social and individual problems created by drinking have already been indicated. Is there a way out? If so, where?
The way out is always there. The readiness to choose it, that is all one needs.
You might have grasped by now that an individual’s addiction could be due to various reasons. The first step involves identifying on your own, the reasons that make you drink. Once you do that, you have to analyze whether these reasons are real or imaginary. Many of them could be imaginary. You need to recognize this first. Let’s suppose that the reason is real, for instance loneliness. Is it difficult to overcome that problem? All it would take is interacting with relatives, friends or neighbours. Loneliness would disappear in a jiffy. And then you no longer have to drink, because you are lonely.
It is important to overcome the factors conducive to drinking. You have to pay special attention to certain methods for that. First and foremost you have to take a pledge that you will never touch alcohol – a solemn pledge that you will not touch alcohol under any circumstances and that you will not think of alcohol as a solution to any of your problems. To break this pledge would amount to breaking faith with one self. It is desirable to tell others about your pledge. You just might not dare to break your pledge simply, because you have told others about it.
You had better shun the company of friends and relatives who drink especially when they are enjoying a drink.
Try not to think about liquor. Thinking about it may cause a relapse.
Ensure that liquor does not figure as a topic of conversation when you talk to your friends or relatives. Talking about new beverages and new brands may lead to temptation.
Become a member of a Voluntary Social Service Organization. It will do you a world of good to listen to the experiences of people who have given up the habit, to read pamphlets against liquor and to listen to the life stories of people who have successfully shaken themselves free from the shackles of liquor.
Find time to join hands with the Prohibition Movement and also other organizations trying to contain the liquor menace. Your life will acquire a new sense of purpose when you take part in their activities.
Devote some time daily to work-outs and games. You must realize how important physical health is in maintaining mental health. When you feel a craving for liquor, try to engage yourself in something creative to drive it away. Better still, you may read, watch something worthwhile on TV, go to the park or engage yourself in some entertaining activity.
You must try to keep your mind free from tension. Evil thoughts have no place in a mind free of tension and conflict. Leisure activities help free your mind of turmoil

It is from thoughts of the Almighty that ordinary mortals gain strength. Visiting religious places and engaging in prayer ensure the presence of God in your life. Firm belief in God will ensure a smooth and straight life. Liquor or other intoxicants will have no place in such a life.
